Memleketinde köyünde yaşayan Mehmet adında bir genç varmış. Mehmet hayatını orada sürdürür, ailesi ile birlikte bağıyla, bahçesiyle ve hayvanlarıyla ilgilenirmiş. Bunun dışında bir mesleği olmayıp boş gezermiş.
Mehmet büyümüş, yetişmiş ve askerlik çağına gelmiş. Askere gideceği gün gelmiş, çatmış ve ilk defa bu sayede köyünden dışarı çıkmış. Bu zamana kadar köyünden başka hiçbir yeri görmeyen Mehmet heybesini hazırlamış, ana-babasıyla helalleşip yollara düşmüş. Askerlik yapacağı şehrin kışlasına ulaşmış ve görevini yapmaya gelen bütün gençler nizamiyede toplanmışlar.
Komutan nizamiyede toplanan acemi askerlerin mesleklerine göre ayrılmasını istemiş, elektrikçiler bir tarafa, tesisatçılar bir tarafa, boyacılar bir tarafa, fırıncılar bir tarafa ve aşçılar bir tarafa derken bütün askerler mesleklerine göre aynı işi yapanlar ile birlikte gruplara ayrılmışlar, Mehmet tek başına kalmış.
Komutan tarafından herkese teker teker görev tazmini yapılmış ve sıra Mehmet’e gelmiş.
Komutan – Senin ne asker?
Mehmet – Mehmet komutanım.
Komutan – Herkes mesleğine göre ayrıldı. Bir tek sen kaldın. Senin mesleğin nedir evladım?
Mehmet – Komutanım ben lopçuyum.
Komutan – Lopçu musun?
Mehmet – Evet komutanım, sivil yaşantımda lopçuluk yapıyorum.
Komutan lopçuluğun ne olduğunu bilmez. Bilmediğini açık etmemek için de Mehmet’e lopçuluk nedir diye sormaz. Lopçuluk hazır yiyici, beleşçi demektir. Mehmet askerliği boyunca hiçbir iş yapamaz. Askerliğini bedavadan yiyip içip ortalıklarda gezinerek bitirir.
Zaman çabuk geçiyor tabii. Üç gün, beş gün derken; günler günleri takip ederken Mehmet askerliğin sonuna gelmiştir ama komutan lopçuluğun ne olduğunu öğrenememiş ve içi içini yemektedir.
Komutan dayanamaz ve Mehmet tezkeresini almadan önce onu bir gün odasına çağırır. Çünkü komutanın lopçuluğun ne olduğunu öğrenmesi için Mehmet’e sormaktan başka şansı yoktur. Mehmet komutanın odasına gelir ve komutan ona sorar.
Komutan – Söyle bakalım, lopçuluk nedir? Askere geldiğin ilk gün lopçuyum dedin, lopçu aşağı lopçu yukarı askerliği bitirdin.
Mehmet – Komutanım size lopçuluğun ne olduğunu anlatırım ancak bir göl kenarına gidip piknik yapmaları gerekmektedir.
Komutan bu duruma sinirlenir ve Mehmet’e sert çıkar. Aklına binbir çeşit şey gelmiştir ama lopçuluğun ne olduğunu da öğrenmek istemektedir.
Komutan piknik hazırlıklarını yaptırır ve bir göl kenarına giderler. Mehmet göl kenarında çakıl taşlarını toplayıp önüne yığar. Bu taşları teker teker göle atmaya başlar. Bir taşı göle atar, lop diye ses gelir. Bir daha taş atar, yine lop diye ses gelir.
Komutan – Napıyorsun?
Mehmet – Komutanım benim sivil hayatta bir işim yok, göl kenarına gidiyorum. Akşama kadar göle taş atıyorum.
Hepimizin etrafında hiçbir iş yapmayıp bir şeye faydasını dokunmayan boş beleş, bedavadan yiyip içen insanlar vardır. Bu hayatta her insanın bir meşgalesi, uğraşı, işi olmalı. Çevresindekilere faydalı olmanın yanı sıra insanın ilk önce kendisine faydası dokunmalıdır.
